Giclée: The New Art of Reproducing Art

When looking at a painting, it’s usually easy to tell whether or not the piece is an original or a reproduction. Reproductions are typically so flat that their only texture comes from the light reflecting off of them. And, of course, only the really nice copies come close to capturing the right tones and hues of the colors.

All of these statements were universally true until very recently…until the advent of Giclée (pronounced zhee-CLAY). From a French word that means literally “to spit” or “to spray,” Giclée reproductions are high-resolution, high-fidelity reproductions produced from digital scans of paintings. The scans performed on the paintings are so powerful that the camera acts almost like an X-ray machine, going over the piece several times to pick up each layer of paint. The result is a unique color-match and quality true to the original shades and hues.

Beyond fidelity to the original painting, Giclée offers other benefits to admirers. Because the reproductions are done individually, a gallery can request one piece at a time, and the material onto which the painting is printed can also be changed. If one collector requests a reproduction on canvas while another asks for the same painting on watercolor paper, both requests easily can be fulfilled. Regardless of the medium, the color has a premium life of seventy-five years.

So convincing are these reproductions, museums and art galleries are now avidly marketing Giclée reproductions as an affordable alternative to the artists’ original works. Artists such as Robert Rauschenburg and David Hockney are already having Giclée reproductions made of their art, and the number of artists following suit is growing rapidly.

Stephen Quiller's December Light for Purchase through CRT

December Light by Stephen Quiller
"December Light" by Stephen Quiller

One such artist is Creede’s very own world-renowned watercolor painter, Stephen Quiller. Quiller has chosen a lyrical piece called December Light depicting Creede in winter to be reproduced through the Giclée method: “My heart is in this particular painting. It is a piece of the downtown evening, December feel that all of us have that live here in Creede. The light has a special emotional quality of the festivity and the season.”

To commemorate Quiller’s first venture into this new high-tech arena, the Quiller Gallery and Creede Repertory Theatre are collaborating to produce and promote these reproductions. Adds Quiller, “The most important thing, being a collaborative piece with the CRT, this is a way to help raise funds for the organization that is most important in keeping Creede alive.” Through the generosity of The Quiller Gallery, all proceeds from the purchase of December Light will benefit the Creede Repertory Theatre.
