A Note from the Executive/Artistic Director
Dear CRT Patron,
It’s funny how one little thing can lead
to a much bigger thing. We’ve been hearing
complaints about our women’s bathrooms with
increasing urgency over the last several
years. In exploring options for expanding
the bathrooms and bringing them up to code,
we became acquainted with the fact that if we bring
one thing up to code we have to bring the
whole building up to code. So we had a code analysis
of the building done. Guess what? CRT was
built prior to Creede adopting standards, and just
about everything about the building would need
to be brought up to current standards. The cost
of doing this would be enormous. So we could just
live with what we have, or we could go ahead and
raise the money to get everything up to snuff.
However, even if we were to solve the current code
issues, the truth is we’re
bursting at the seams. The demand for our
productions increases every year, and our
most popular shows are selling out for entire
runs. And, honestly, the two theatre spaces we
are using are not particularly conducive
to our repertory format. The difficulty of set
changes is substantial. Addressing code issues
in our theatre, even after spending a lot of money,
would still leave much unaddressed. It looks like
we have another challenge. As you can see, we are
engaged in some serious long-term planning.
We have
many questions to explore. We know the
questions for CRT have larger implications
for Creede and the San Luis Valley. One way to
begin this important conversation about the future
with you is to start by articulating what is fundamental
to what we believe as an organization. The
following is a first attempt at doing so:
We believe
art provides an important connecting point
to our inner life and to our neighbor.
We
believe we have a responsibility to making
Creede and the San Luis Valley a better place for
our children and grandchildren and great grandchildren.
We believe in aspiring to the highest levels of
excellence in our work.
We believe in protecting and preserving our history,
our culture and our environment.
We believe we have a prominent role in the future
economic viability of our area.
We believe in providing a safe place for our patrons
and our company.
We believe the things we do now will have a significant
impact on the quality of life for citizens and
visitors of Creede into the foreseeable future.
We believe it is our duty to provide opportunities,
mentoring and practical training for the next generation
of theatre artists.
We believe arts education makes children better
students now and better citizens in the future.
We believe in creating a home for artists.
We look forward to growing and working and
playing together to create a better community now
and in the future.
